Wednesday, September 30, 2009
Children's safety is of utmost priority when they head back to school. Many children are at risk when they are not following the basic safety rules. According to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, 11 pedestrians younger than 17 were killed and 491 injured in 2008. Also, three children on bikes were killed and 542 injured.
All Star Nissan of Devon, a leading Nissan dealership in Devon, serving the greater Philadelphia area, cares for children's safety and puts forward a few basic school-year reminders to parents, students, and drivers.
•Remind your students to look both ways when they are crossing the street to board their school bus, or at crossroads as they walk to school. Remind them that it is best to cross where a crossing guard is posted.
•Make sure students line up at a distance of 6 or more feet from the school bus. They should board only when the bus stops and the driver tells them to do so.
•If students want to cross the road to board the bus, they should do so from at least 10 feet ahead of the bus - and should not cross behind it.
•While getting off of the bus, children should hold the handrail and should take care to ensure that their clothes or bags with straps or drawstrings do not get caught in the door.
•If a child drops something near a bus, the driver should be alerted immediately by the other students. They should not try to pick it up, which can put the child out of another driver's view.
•For the safety of our children it is very importantly that the driver stop no closer than 20 feet from a bus with flashing red overhead lights. They should not move ahead till those red lights are off. It must be noted that yellow overhead flashers indicate a bus will soon stop, so slow down and prepare to stop. One should proceed cautiously on seeing a bus stopping with its hazard lights on.
•Children can pop out of nowhere while going to school. So Drivers - be alert and drive cautiously everywhere whether you are in neighborhoods or in school zones.
